That said, it’s still smart to remove your jewelry before using harsh chemicals such as chlorine-heavy cleaners, and to keep perfume and lotion off pearls and gemstones so they stay beautiful longer.

Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of real gold bonded to a durable metal core using heat and pressure. By U.S. standards, gold-filled must contain at least 5 percent gold by weight, which makes it far more substantial than gold plating.
